50 Years of Growth and Innovation
The Dermatology Foundation marked its 50th anniversary last year—and much has changed since its founding. In 1964, there were only a handful of departments and a lack of full-time dermatologists at many medical centers. The specialty needed an organization that was dedicated solely to its growth. Recognizing this tremendous need, ten pioneering physicians and scientists formed the Dermatology Foundation to assure the field’s future.
The first grants were awarded by the DF in 1967 and totaled $30,000. Over the past 50 years, the collective commitments of its many supporters have enabled the Foundation to expand its funding to 16 different award categories across all areas of the specialty. in 2015, the DF awarded a variety of research awards totaling $3.1 million to 60 innovative, worthy individuals.
|A Gift for Future Generations|
In recognition of its 50th Anniversary, an Anniversary Gift category was created for DF members to make a special contribution to the Research Endowment Fund, which is board restricted for future research funding. The Foundation is grateful to the 82 members listed here who provided an anniversary gift in addition to their annual member dues.
|An Effective Investment|
To date, the DF has awarded about 350 Career Development Awards (CDAs) to new physician-scientists with the talent, drive, and vision to become leaders in the field. CDAs have proved immensely beneficial to recipients:
- 80% of awardees have remained in academics
- 86% of these individuals received federal funding
- Each $1 of CDA funding garnered $10 or more in NIH grant support
Celebrating Five Decades of Progress
Thanks to the generosity of Amgen, Inc., the DF marked 50 years of serving the specialty at its Anniversary Gala. DF members joined their colleagues on March 22nd at San Francisco’s historic city hall for an exceptional evening celebrating the many accomplishments that they helped to make possible.
Special thanks to Amgen, Inc. for underwriting this special event.

"Dermatology has changed tremendously since the DF was created, and it’s hard to conceive what it would have been like today without it—and even more difficult to imagine its future. We all owe enormous thanks to everyone who has made the important work of the DF possible."
— Michael D. Tharp, MD, DF President
